Abstract
Receptor status, proliferative activity, loss of differentiation, age, lymph node metastasis and overexpression of oncogenes are related events that may affect the prognosis of patient with breast cancer. Sixty-four unselected breast carcinomas
from
paraffin blocks of mastectomy specimens were immunostained for MIBI proliferation associated antigen (Ki-67), cerbB-2 oncoprotein, antigens forestrogen receptor(ER) and progesterone receptor(PR). Immunohistochemical results were compared with
histological findings and clinical data. C-erbB2 protein overexpression was found in 20 cases(31.3%) and associated with a low histological tumor grade(p=0.035), low MIBI labelling index, negative receptor status and younger age(<50) without
statistical
significance. Twenty-one cases(32.8%) demonstrated high grade in MIBI labelling index, and stained in more number of cases of negative receptor status, negative results of c-erbB-2 protein overexpression, younger age, low histological grade and
negative
lymph nodal metastasis without statistical significance. Estrogen receptor status was associated with low histological grade (p=0.02). In many studies, C-erbB-2 protein overexpression had been associated with poor prognosis, high histological
grade,
negative receptor status, high proliferative activity and lymph nodal metastasis. In this study, c-erbB2 overexpression is related with low histological grade and does not associated any other prognostic factors.
